CHIP CARDS Chip Cards are Coming! Members who hold a MasterCard credit card that is expiring after mid November 2008 will receive their card as a MasterCard® chip card. Any new MasterCard credit cards ordered after this date will also be a chip card.
The chip MasterCard® credit card provides you with all the great features and benefits of your card today but with an additional layer of security.
You may notice a few differences:
- Prior to receiving your MasterCard® Credit chip card you will receive a PIN number in the mail. This card can be re-pinned to a number of your choice by visiting New Community Credit Union.
- Instead of a signature to make a credit card purchase, you may be required to enter a 4 digit Personal Identification Number (PIN).
- When completing a chip transaction you will be required to leave your card in the terminal for the entire transaction and remove your card when prompted.
The complete implementation of chip technology will happen over time. So, for some time, you will see cards with both a chip and a magnetic stripe. As well, cards currently in the market with the magnetic stripe will remain a reliable and secure method of payment.

An illegal card reader is placed on an ATM, and then a person, a camera, or a false pin pad reader is used to capture your PIN. It can also happen when you are making a purchase (Point of Sale), a merchant will swipe your card in the legitimate POS terminal, and then swipe it a second time in an illegal card reading device.
Where Does it Happen? When using your debit card to either make a purchase, or at an ATM/ABM (Bank Machine) to take out cash. Don't be fooled into thinking that this could only happen in a larger city. There are many instances that debit card skimming has happened in the last month in Saskatoon.
How to Prevent Debit Card Skimming from Happening *Protect your PIN! NEVER tell your PIN number to anyone, NEVER write it down, and DO NOT use an obvious number (birthdays, etc.) *Whenever you are entering your PIN, always sheild your hand to make it hard for anyone to see what numbers you are entering. *Look for physical alterations on ATM's and POS terminals. If it looks suspicious, DON'T USE IT! Better safe than sorry! *Watch your debit card when making a transaction. Only allow your card to be swiped once. Whenever possible demand that you be the one to swipe your card. If it seems like it has been swiped twice, contact us immediately.
